Sewing threads for table linen

Table linen combines functionality, durability and decorative design. From elegant tablecloths and fine napkins to practical table runners and placemats, seams must withstand regular handling and repeated washing while maintaining their strength, shape and appearance. The right sewing threads contribute to durable construction, neat finishes and a consistent appearance across different fabric types.

AMANN offers a range of sewing and embroidery threads for table linen manufacturing. Rasant 120 is recommended as a universal sewing thread for tablecloths, napkins and other table linen products. Rasant 75 provides an option for heavier fabrics, while Isacord 40 and Rasant 120 are recommended for decorative embroidery, for example on napkins. The appropriate thread depends on the fabric properties, seam construction, decorative requirements and manufacturing conditions.

Table linen manufacturing – from tablecloths to embroidered napkins

AMANN sewing thread recommendation for table linen

The production of table linen requires sewing threads that provide reliable seam strength, consistent stitch formation and a neat appearance. Since tablecloths, napkins and other table textiles are frequently handled, washed and reused, the seams must remain durable while preserving the fabric’s appearance and functionality.

For the application shown below, AMANN recommends Rasant 120 as a universal sewing thread for table linen. For topstitch seams, Rasant Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is used as both needle and bobbin thread in combination with a 301 lockstitch.

This stitch type is suitable for producing neat, consistent seams and visible stitching on table linen. The illustrated application specifies a minimum needle size of Nm 70 / No. 10.

Depending on the fabric and sewing requirements, AMANN recommends further thread options:

  • Rasant 75 for heavy table linen and thicker fabrics
  • Isacord 40 for decorative embroidery, such as embroidered napkins
  • Rasant 120 for embroidery applications where this thread is suitable for the desired design and processing conditions

The selection of sewing or embroidery thread should take into account the fabric type, material thickness, stitch type, stitch density and desired appearance. For decorative embroidery, the embroidery design and production conditions must also be considered.

The corresponding technical recommendation for the illustrated sewing application is provided in the table below.

Requirements for sewing threads in table linen manufacturing

Table linen seams must withstand regular use, handling and repeated washing while maintaining a neat appearance and the durability of the finished product. Depending on the fabric, product construction and intended use, requirements may include:

  • High seam strength and durability
  • Resistance to repeated mechanical stress
  • Reliable performance during regular washing and appropriate care processes
  • Consistent stitch formation
  • Reliable sewing performance at industrial production speeds
  • Suitability for lightweight, medium-weight and heavy table linen fabrics
  • Compatibility with linen, cotton and blended fabrics
  • Neat and uniform seams, particularly on visible edges and topstitching
  • Reliable performance in hemming and topstitching applications
  • Consistent seam appearance across different fabric weights and constructions
  • Suitability for decorative stitching and embroidery where required
  • Durable finishes that preserve the fabric’s shape and appearance

The right combination of sewing thread, thread size, stitch type, needle size and fabric helps achieve durable seams and clean finishes while preserving the appearance and functionality of table linen.

Choosing the right sewing thread for table linen

There is no single sewing thread or thread size suitable for every table linen application. The appropriate solution depends on several factors, including:

  • Type of product, such as tablecloths, napkins, table runners or placemats
  • Fabric type and material composition
  • Fabric weight, thickness and structure
  • Number of fabric layers
  • Expected mechanical stress during use and handling
  • Washing frequency and care requirements
  • Seam position and construction
  • Hemming, topstitching or decorative stitching requirements
  • Desired seam appearance and visibility
  • Requirements for decorative embroidery
  • Machine type and sewing conditions
  • Stitch type and stitch density
  • Needle and bobbin thread combination
  • Thread size
  • Needle size

For standard table linen applications, Rasant 120 is recommended as a versatile sewing thread. Heavier fabrics may require Rasant 75 to provide an appropriate combination of thread strength and seam appearance.

For decorative embroidery on napkins and other table textiles, Isacord 40 or Rasant 120 can be considered, depending on the design, fabric and processing requirements. Embroidery thread selection should take into account the desired visual effect, stitch density and compatibility with the material.

For the illustrated topstitching application, Rasant Ticket 120 / Tex 24 is recommended as both needle and bobbin thread with a 301 lockstitch.

Sewing and embroidery threads should therefore be selected according to the fabric properties, seam construction, decorative requirements and manufacturing conditions to ensure reliable processing, durable seam quality and a consistent appearance.
