Sewing threads for suitcases and luggage
Suitcases and luggage have to withstand demanding conditions during transport, handling and everyday use. Repeated loading, pulling, abrasion and mechanical stress place high demands on seams and materials. Sewing threads therefore need to provide reliable seam strength, abrasion resistance and consistent sewing performance while also supporting a clean appearance on visible seam positions.
For the applications shown on this page, AMANN recommends Onyx in thread sizes matched to the respective seam position and material. Saba is used for lining seams, while Serafil can be selected as an alternative depending on the individual requirements and sewing conditions.

AMANN sewing thread recommendation for leather suitcases and luggage
Suitcases and luggage combine high mechanical demands with visible seam positions that contribute to the appearance of the finished product. Closing seams need to provide reliable structural performance, while topstitch seams must combine durability with a clean and consistent seam appearance. Lining seams generally require finer thread sizes.
For the applications shown above, AMANN recommends Onyx for closing and topstitch seams. Onyx Ticket 40 / Tex 70 is used for the closing seam, while Onyx Ticket 30 / Tex 105 is used for the more prominent topstitch seam. For lining seams, Saba 80 / Tex 40 is used. All three applications shown use a 301 lockstitch.

Requirements for sewing threads in suitcases and luggage
The sewing thread is an important part of the overall luggage construction. Depending on the type of luggage, material and seam position, requirements may include:
- high seam strength
- high abrasion resistance
- reliable performance under repeated mechanical stress
- high durability
- consistent stitch formation
- reliable sewing performance
- suitability for different material thicknesses
- suitability for closing, lining and topstitch seams
- an attractive appearance for visible seam positions
The right combination of sewing thread, thread size, stitch type, needle size, material and seam construction helps create durable and reliable seams for luggage exposed to frequent handling and mechanical stress.
Choosing the right sewing thread for suitcases and luggage
There is no single thread size or sewing parameter suitable for every type of luggage. The appropriate solution depends on several factors, including:
- type and intended use of the luggage
- outer and lining materials
- material thickness
- expected mechanical load
- abrasion exposure
- seam position and construction
- closing, lining or topstitch seam
- stitch type and stitch density
- required seam appearance
- thread size
- needle size
A highly stressed closing seam, for example, may require a different thread size from an internal lining seam or a prominent decorative topstitch seam. The sewing thread should therefore always be selected according to the specific material, seam position and performance requirements.
